FACTS

I used to think that having any amount of psilocybin mushrooms would turn into a psychedelic trip. It's actually all about the dose. Some people use them as a daily supplement, only having a really small amount that results in no noticeable psychedelic effects ("microdosing"). The greater the amount you consume, the greater the psychedelic effects you'll experience. This is wonderful because this allows you to find an amount that is comfortable for you. More on this in the "Dose" section below.

Psilocybin mushrooms are relatively safe. The median lethal dose for a 130lb person is about 3.7lbs (1,678 grams) of dried mushrooms or 37lbs of fresh mushrooms. (1, 2) To put this into perspective, mushroom tea only requires about 1 gram. That's less than 0.001% of a lethal dose. 😄

Also, there are so many studies that show psilocybin mushrooms can help people with trauma, PTSD, depression, addiction and other ailments. Several countries have approved it for therapeutic use.

Also, apparently the chitin protein (the "meat" of the mushroom) is one of the main factors that sometimes gives people nausea. This is why making mushroom tea is the gentlest way of consuming psilocybin  mushrooms because you don't even need to eat the mushroom! The psilocybin dissolves into the tea.

SETTING

This is one of the most important parts of a psilocybin mushroom experience, especially when you're new to this. It's very helpful to have a comfortable and safe environment. Maybe some relaxing music playing in the background. Wearing comfortable clothes. Have comfortable blankets or sheets available. Take care of your duties ahead of time so that you can set some time aside for yourself. Have plenty of stuff to drink, snacks, food, games or positive things to do ready for you. 🥳

EXPERIENCE

Try not to eat much the hour before you have the tea and only have light drinks or water. This helps minimize the feeling of nausea in some people.

The experience lasts about 3 to 4 hours when doing a small amount and longer the bigger the amount. It gradually picks up and gradually fades away. On a small dose, you generally don't feel very much in the first 30 minutes. You generally start to feel the mushrooms pickup from 30 minutes to an hour and a half. This is what I call the "entry phase."

During the entry phase some people may feel a bit of nausea or a warm feeling in their stomach. Some also feel a little dizzy. This is because your energy is loosening up and starting to flow a little better. Some feel a little bit of anxiety. This is normal because it's a new experience and some are unaware of how the experience is going to unfold. During this part, continue making yourself comfortable and just sit with the experience. The entry phase will eventually subside.

Once the entry phase begins to fade away, you'll begin to feel the personality of the mushroom more and more. This is the "middle phase." Some strains are so relaxing... Feeling like your body is being massaged all over. Like a warm, fuzzy feeling. 🥰

Other strains are more "magical" and psychoactive. 🧚‍♂️✨ You may notice everything starting to move slightly, almost as if things are "breathing." You can notice this effect more on things that have repeating patterns, like curtains or the floor / grass.

Your thoughts and feelings can be amplified also, the good ones as well as the bad ones. This is why it's very important that you are in a safe and positive environment. If you ever feel like you're drifting into a negative emotion, bring yourself back into more of a positive mindset by focusing on the music that you're playing, the nature, your pets or other loving things around you. 💗 If you're doing a "heroic" macro dose (2 to 6 grams depending on the strain), remember, psilocybin mushrooms are not going to kill you 😄 and the experience will eventually fade away. Just stay safe and try to be as comfortable as you can.

Other common experiences include: Feeling as if things are even more in "3D" like clouds. 😂 If you close your eyes, some people see colors or light. The "buddha energy": just a desire to be very still and just pay attention to what you're feeling. 🧘‍♀️ Drinking full moon water during the middle phase can help amplify more of the buddha energy. Feeling a sense of connection or "oneness" with nature and all of those/that around you. Things can become "brighter" or colors can become more "saturated." Movies or games can be richer in color and have more emotional impact.

You might also start feeling "the munchies" and get very hungry. 😂 This is when your snacks and foods will come in handy.

Eventually the experience will start to subside and fade away.

ITEMS

The following items are helpful when making mushroom tea.

  • Blender or grinder. The NutriBullet blender is great but any other bullet type (1, 2) or blade coffee grinder will work. This is to grind up your batch of mushrooms. Burr grinders don't work very well.

  • Empty tea bags or stainless steel tea strainers.

  • Weight scale in the grams range. This one includes precise weights you can use to calibrate the scale every time you use it. It comes with a little plastic tray you can pour your ground up mushrooms into but it's actually kind of small. Little plastic containers that you can buy at a dollar store that are about the size of a large ice cube (~ 1.75"x2.25"x1") work a little better. Be sure to remove the weights from the the placeholders in the scale while you're measuring because sometimes the edge of your plastic container can "sit" on the weights resulting in an inaccurate measurement. 😅

  • Tea kettle and a thermometer or even better the Cosori Electric Gooseneck Kettle with preset temperatures for precisely warming up your water without boiling it. Buy it used on Amazon for an even better deal! 🥳 Please note, a lot of kettles with manual temperature adjustment or presets have a plastic volume indicator window on the side of the kettle or plastic on the underside of the lid. The Cosori kettle I list here does not have any plastic that is exposed to the steam.

  • Your favorite tea for added flavor. Yogi's organic chamomile is a good choice. You can sweeten it with honey if you'd like. Glyphosate-free honey is healthier.

  • Optional: ginger root to minimize nausea even more.

GRINDING

Not all psilocybin mushroom strains have the same strength and even mushrooms of the same strain in the same batch may have different strengths. 😮

The way to normalize the dose is to grind your whole batch of mushrooms together. This way, each amount that you take has approximately the same strength because they're all mixed together. This is crucial to do in order to have a consistent experience each time.

Break your mushrooms into centimeter / half inch pieces and place these in your blender. When you grind the mushrooms, you're aiming for a "flaky" consistency. You do not want to grind the mushrooms into a powder. The best way to go about this is to "pulse" your blender in half second increments and shake the blender container in between pulses to mix it all well. Remember, you can always grind more but you can never "un-grind." 😂 Take your time.

If by mistake you end up grinding them into a powder, then you have to use the empty tea bags. What you're trying to avoid is consuming the chitin, the meat of the mushroom. However, if you achieve a good, flaky consistency, then you can use a stainless steel tea strainer to steep your mushroom tea which is the purest way of making the tea with no added compounds (like from the tea bag materials).

I have not found any empty, organic certified tea bags online. But another way to go about it is to buy organic tea like Yogi's, carefully empty that tea bag and use that instead. Reputable companies like Yogi go through an extensive process to ensure their tea bags have minimal contaminants.

METHOD

Ok so you're all prepped up and ready to make your tea! 🥳🙏 Here's how to do it:

  • Optional: shred a little bit of ginger.

  • Use your scale to measure the amount of mushrooms you'd like to try. See "Dose" section below. Place them into an empty tea bag or a stainless steel strainer.

  • Place your mushroom tea bag and flavored tea bag in your tea cup.

  • Optional: add some of the ginger you shredded into your tea cup.

  • Warm your water up to 80*C or 176*F (170*F is fine). You don't want to boil the water (that's 100*C / 212*F) because that decreases the potency of the mushrooms. (1, 2)

  • Let your tea steep for at least 10 minutes.

  • Enter into a state of gratitude and state a positive intention for your session. 🙏

  • Sip on your tea over a few minutes and enjoy! 🥳

DOSE

It's always good to start with a small amount when trying out a new mushroom strain or batch. You can start with 0.25 grams one day for example. Mushrooms are fully metabolized by the body after about a couple of days, so it's best to wait at least a couple of days before trying them again if you're still trying to figure out your ideal amount. Next time try a little more, say 0.5 grams. Wait at least a couple of more days and try a slightly bigger amount. Repeat until you find an amount that is comfortable for you.

There are no set definitions for the different types of amounts. The following are just generalizations. Remember, each psilocybin mushroom is different and can have different ranges. Always start with a small amount.

A "micro dose" are the amounts were you don't feel any psychedelic effects at all. Generally below 0.5 grams depending on the strain. Studies suggest that micro dosing on psilocybin mushrooms on a daily basis may have beneficial effects such as improving mood, reducing anxiety/depression, and enhancing focus. (1, 2, 3, 4)

A "minimum dose" is the amount were you barely start to feel anything. This amount, or just a tad bit lower, is good for people who are completely new to mushrooms or psychedelics in general. This amount can help people come to trust psilocybin mushrooms. Generally about 0.3 to 1.3 grams depending on the strain.

A "meditation dose" is the amount were you feel a gentle amount of the mushroom's psychedelic effects. This is a good amount for meditating. Generally this is about 0.5 to 2 grams of mushrooms depending on the strain.

A "heroic / macro dose" is a large amount of mushrooms where you're literally on a psychedelic journey. 😂 It's about 2 to 6 grams, depending on the strain. I do not recommend any beginners to start here. This level requires more "mental muscle" to be able to maintain a positive and balanced mindset.

STRAINS

There are so many different types of psilocybin mushroom strains. Each strain has it's own "personality."

Shakti: These are so gentle and relaxing. Great for meditating. 🧘‍♀️✨ It feels like your body is being massaged all over.

Albino Penis Envy: Yes, funny name. 😂 These are stronger, more "magical" and can be very giggly. Definitely more psychoactive.

Albino MVP: So relaxing and connecting with nature. 💗

Steel Magnolia: Very "magical" mushrooms. 🧚‍♂️✨ The environment can feel dense as if you're inside jello. Very psychoactive, things move / "breathe" more. They're potent so it only takes a small amount to achieve a meditation dose.
